The location
The guest room, being only 150 m from Alexanderplatz, is very central. Attractions like the TV tower, Volksbühne, Hackescher Markt and Sophienstrasse are less than 500 m away. In the last few years, the area of the Hackeschen Markt (200 - 400 m away) has developed into a pulsating part of the city. Many visitors are enticed, especially in the evenings, by what the area has to offer culturally, and by the many restaurants and cafés found here. The mixture of historical 19th century houses around Sophienstrasse and the elaborate, newly constructed buildings have made this area well-known, not only to those living in Berlin The Museumsinsel (museum island) (about 600 m away) is the home to many art and cultural collections of the world, like the Pergamonmuseum, the Alte Museum (in the style of a Greek temple), the Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie), the Bode Museum and the Neue Museum. Because of its unique construction and cultural displays, UNESCO declared it as a world heritage site in 1999. Your host Peter is a born-and-bred Berliner who knows the city inside out. During DDR times, he was the co-ordinating engineer for the reconstruction and redevelopment of Sophienstrasse. This included Rosenthaler Str., Gipsstr., the big Hamburger Str. and the Oranienburger. The Hackeschen Höfe is found in the middle of these streets. Since the 60s, he has participated in the construction of the parliament buildings, TV tower and the Palace of the Republic. When the Berlin wall was erected, Peter was 14 year’s old. His father was on the west and he was on the east side. This was an adventurous time, about which he has many stories he will gladly share with those interested. He not only speaks German, but also Polish, Russian and some English. He is now retired and welcomes uncomplicated, sociable guests of any age The room The room is very simple and has only the bare necessities. It is ideal if you are looking for an inexpensive, yet centrally located place to stay, directly at Alexanderplatz. The room has a pull-out sofa-bed for 1-2 guests.
